Paranormal experts divide haunting into three classes. Each of these classes has its own unique characteristics.

Spirit entities can interact with humans in many different forms. Determining what type of haunting is taking place will provide ghost hunters with the best means to communicate with the entity. A majority of entities are harmless, but it is important to be able to spot possible demonic spirits. Often spirits are caught in a loop, and do not even realize or acknowledge that humans are interacting in the same space that they are in.

How to Determine if a Haunting is Residual

A residual haunting is simply an entity that is looping continuously doing the same activity. This is the most frequent type of haunting. It is believe that the entities are stuck in a time continuum, and repeat the same actions over and over again. For example, the spirit of an elderly lady rocking and humming repeatedly could be a residual haunting. The lady participated in this type of activity alive, and she still continues to do so as a spirit.

Another characteristic of a residual haunting is the spirit does not seem to interact. Since the entities are caught in a time loop, they will not interact or respond to humans. It is believed that these spirits are not even aware that they are sharing a space with others. Although it is extremely rare, there are documented cases where a residual spirit did interact. A residual haunting is harmless, and can be ignored if desired.

How to determine if a Haunting is Intelligent

An intelligent haunting is very unique. With this type of haunting the entity will display emotion and can interact with humans. They are very aware of their surroundings and what is going on around them. These spirits are known to rearrange items, move objects, appear as apparitions, and can even enjoy playing tricks.

Great indicators of an intelligent haunting are disembodied voices, electronics being turned on and off, doors opening or closing, items being moved, giggling, and attempted manifestations in front of humans. These entities are harmless a majority of time, and remain in a location because they are attached to it for some reason.

How to determine if a Haunting is a Portal Haunting

A portal haunting, also referred to as an in-human or demonic haunt, is the most feared type of haunting. Spirits in this type of haunting are mischievous, malicious, and it's believed that they can harm humans. It is believed that a majority of poltergeist entities are centered on young children. It is unknown why exactly this is, but some theories speculate that children can unknowingly generate the energy needed for demonic spirits to manifest.

Demon spirits can take on any form, and can display extraordinary strength. Some theories suggest that these spirits were never human, and are meant to try to destroy someone emotionally. Since this type of haunting can be extremely dangerous it is strongly recommended for anyone who is experiencing this type of haunting to seek the help of a professional paranormal investigator.
